Food Production in the Age of Gene-Editing Technologies

What factors influence your food purchases, be it from a grocery store or a local farmers’ market? Is it the level of freshness? The origin of the food? Whether it’s certified organic or conventional? In a democratic society, the liberty of choice is crucial, which raises significant questions about the recent regulations concerning gene-edited plant seeds.

Understanding Gene Editing

Have you come across CRISPR? No, it’s not some kitchen appliance or a trendy snack but rather a sophisticated technique for editing genes in organisms. This allows for the enhancement of specific traits or the elimination of undesired features.

Imagine it as a precision tool that can modify particular genetic sequences within an organism. This technology, applicable to various types of plants and animals, carries benefits like disease resistance, but also poses risks including unexpected effects, increasing inequality between socioeconomic classes, intellectual property issues, and a lack of transparency.

Are We Acting Too Quickly?

On May 3, 2023, Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau revealed the government’s approval for the introduction of new gene-edited (GE) seeds into Canada without the requirement for health or safety evaluations and only voluntary reporting (administered by Seed Canada, an industry association). This decision raised alarm among organic farmers and consumers across the nation.

According to Tia Loftsgard, executive director of the Canada Organic Trade Association, “Organic standards in Canada—and globally—strictly forbid any form of genetic engineering, encompassing gene editing, genetic modification, and the use of CRISPR technology.”

Unlike genetically modified organisms (GMOs) which are subject to environmental safety regulations, gene-edited seeds currently evade such assessments and public accountability.

Implications for Our Diets

Gene editing in plants has the potential to improve flavors, nutritional value, and disease resistance, as well as enhance their resilience to climate change, including challenges like drought, high salinity, temperature extremes, and pathogens.

The rollout of gene-edited plants should undergo a comprehensive and systematic evaluation while keeping the public informed about the underlying science, potential risks, advantages, and implications for agriculture.

As Loftsgard points out, “The current guidelines lack alignment with the precautionary principle, which is crucial for the organic sector.” She emphasizes that mandatory traceability and transparency are essential for empowering both farmers and consumers in Canada to make informed choices about cultivation methods.

Coping with Climate Change and Food Security

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that, by the middle of this century, climate change could leave up to 80 million people facing hunger in various regions globally, raising alarms over malnutrition and increasing death rates linked to inadequate diets.

The symbiotic relationship between food production and environmental health necessitates a multifaceted strategy that includes effective water management, soil restoration, community-driven agricultural practices (urban farming included), and diverse farming and landscape practices.

Loftsgard asserts that, “By implementing intelligent land use changes and agroecological innovations, alongside dietary adjustments and production methods, as well as policies aimed at reducing waste, it’s feasible to generate adequate food supplies while preserving natural resources.”

While gene-edited plants can be a helpful resource for creating resilient crop varieties, it’s crucial to consider the associated risks. Loftsgard warns that “Genetically modified plants and seeds are not the ultimate solution and are often used alongside pesticides.” She highlights the complexity of food systems, which depend on the interplay between crops, their environments, soil health, and biodiversity.

Emphasizing Progress While Ensuring Transparency

Is it possible for advancements in science, agricultural practices, and consumer demands to coexist? Like many important issues, maintaining open dialogue and fostering transparency is essential. Public visibility allows consumers to make educated choices about their food and the agricultural methods they support, whether traditional or gene-edited.

Moreover, differing regulations on gene-edited plants in various nations can impact the dynamics of food trade.

The matter of seed patenting—contrary to the concept of keeping seeds in the public domain—could also intensify disputes that influence the livelihoods of farmers and the choices available to consumers.

Loftsgard clarifies, “The organic and non-GMO sectors are not against the availability of gene-edited seeds,” but instead advocate for the establishment of mandatory traceability and transparency, allowing Canadian farmers and consumers the freedom to select their cultivation methods; a mere voluntary database is inadequate.

GE Foods and Seeds in Numbers

· 40 crops have been modified using CRISPR, including rice (43%), tomatoes (12%), maize (9%), wheat (7%), and potatoes (4%).

· In Canada, 5 genetically modified crops were being cultivated as of 2022: corn, canola, soybeans, sugar beets, and alfalfa.

· At least 200 international patent applications for GE seeds/plants have been submitted by 7 major corporations.
