Achieve Summer
Regardless of how busy your agenda may be, there’s a summer beauty routine tailored for every woman. Here’s your roadmap to achieving fabulous hair, skin, and nails right from the comfort of your home—even if you only have a few minutes to spare. (After all, managing the world takes time!)
If you have 5 minutes …
Face
Dedicate a few moments to using a jade facial roller to invigorate your complexion. These rollers, treasured for centuries in China, harness the calming properties of jade alongside gentle facial massage. “The cooling sensation of jade alleviates stress, diminishes puffiness, and brightens the skin,” explains Sarah Walker, NP, from McLean Dermatology and Skincare Center. Begin at the center of your neck and roll upward towards your hairline.
Hair
“Brushing your hair and scalp is often undervalued,” notes Austin-based stylist Micky Kibbe. “It helps to dislodge dirt and keep loose hairs from clogging your drain while stimulating the scalp.” He recommends a gentle but thorough brushing before washing your hair, starting from the ends and working your way to the roots.
Nails
Indulge in a quick manicure without polish. “Five minutes is sufficient to restore ragged, dry cuticles,” advises dermatologist Dana Stern, founder of Dr. Dana Beauty. Use a warm washcloth to gently push back your cuticles after a bath or shower, then trim any hangnails with a sharp nail clipper (avoid cutting the actual cuticle). Finish by moisturizing your cuticles with sunflower oil to enhance flexibility and minimize brittleness.
If you have 30 minutes …
Face
Consider using topical probiotics. “Probiotic skincare effectively exfoliates while offering antimicrobial properties that help soothe both blemish-prone and lackluster skin,” says Paula Simpson, nutritionist and co-founder of Zea Skin Solutions. Probiotic-infused products, including sprays and cleansing oils, are becoming increasingly popular—vegan options are also available.
With a 30-minute window, Simpson recommends using a probiotic mask to clear congestion. Blend a probiotic capsule with 4 tablespoons of soy yogurt and apply it evenly to your face (avoiding the eye area). Alternatively, mix a plant-based liquid probiotic with a bit of olive oil. Allow the mask to sit for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping it off with a lukewarm washcloth and applying moisturizer.
Hair
Kibbe suggests treating your hair to a simple hydrating treatment using coconut oil, which is excellent for ultra-dry scalps and hair. Work the oil through your strands, starting from the ends and moving upwards toward the scalp, then comb through. Cover your hair with a shower cap and enjoy an episode of your favorite show for at least 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water.
Hands
Hands are often among the first areas to show signs of aging. While we can’t rewind time to apply sunscreen, you can address the damage with glycolic acid. Many natural products are available that can work wonders; though they are often labeled for use on facial skin, they are equally effective on the backs of the hands. Use them two to three times a week for optimal results, and apply a natural sunscreen afterward.
If you have 2 hours …
Skin
Having two uninterrupted hours to indulge in skincare is every self-care enthusiast’s dream. Begin with a dry brush to exfoliate and stimulate circulation, paying close attention to your legs, thighs, and arms. Then, prepare a bath with seaweed and Epsom salts to detoxify, soften your skin, and relax tired muscles. Don’t forget to apply an oatmeal face mask and dive into a good book for a well-deserved break.
Hair
No need to visit a salon for proper hair care! Wash, rinse, and repeat at home while treating yourself to a gentle scalp massage in the shower. Take your time with styling, as Kibbe emphasizes that it will help extend the life of your blowout. Add a few drops of marula or argan oil as a leave-in conditioner—their lightweight properties ensure your hair remains fresh and not greasy.
Feet
After being confined in boots all winter, your feet deserve a thorough pedicure as sandal season approaches. Start by removing old polish, then exfoliate to eliminate dead skin and calluses, suggests Dr. Stern. Conclude with a rich lotion, like shea butter, and a blend of lavender oil and a carrier oil of your choice. Slip on cozy socks for a soothing end to your routine.
