Innovating for Health: Pure Origin and Grounds
Pure Origin
“We are passionate about people and coffee.”
Numerous studies suggest that coffee drinking offers benefits that extend beyond just waking you up; it may also reduce the risk of conditions like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s.
Moreover, the impact of coffee can resonate spiritually and morally as well as physically. Imagine enjoying your morning coffee while appreciating the journey of its production and how it positively influences an underserved community far away.
Pure Origin Coffee embraces this vision, aspiring to connect individuals globally through “pure coffee, pure people, and pure stories.”
“Our passion lies in both people and coffee. The craft of coffee embodies both art and science, fostering connections among everyone,” states Amy Kihnke, marketing manager at Pure Origin.
Pure Origin is dedicated to sourcing premium coffee beans while ensuring fair compensation for farmers. Their mission extends even further by fostering direct, meaningful connections between consumers and producers and assisting non-profit initiatives within these communities.
“By sharing the narratives and initiatives of farmers globally, we encourage local engagement in sustainable causes,” Kihnke explains. Using cutting-edge augmented reality, Pure Origin enhances the experience by animating farmers’ images on their coffee packaging, showcasing the initiatives they support—including clean water efforts, support for small businesses, and cervical cancer testing.
Grounds For Health
“We will never be satisfied until every woman has access to high-quality cervical cancer prevention services.”
In Kenya, Pure Origin collaborates with Grounds for Health, an international non-profit organization striving to fight cervical cancer by partnering with coffee businesses and health officials.
“Our goal is to create a pathway toward inclusive healthcare globally, focusing on the prevention of cervical cancer in coffee-growing communities,” as highlighted on the Grounds for Health website.
Cervical cancer is a largely preventable illness and is responsible for a significant portion of cancer fatalities among women in East Africa. Grounds for Health is relentless in its efforts: “We will never rest until every woman has access to high-quality cervical cancer prevention services.”
This unique partnership between coffee and social activism emerged from a business trip undertaken by founder Dan Cox to Mexico in 1996, during which he was confronted with extreme poverty and gender disparities, fundamentally altering his perspective.
“Whether it was sheer optimism, ignorance, or luck, something clicked for me, and 25 years later, we have expanded into five additional countries, screened over 135,000 women, treated more than 11,000, and trained upwards of 575 healthcare providers and over 1,000 community health advocates,” Cox shares.
The organization has identified a significant healthcare accessibility gap as a critical issue faced by underserved communities, particularly in rural regions where coffee is cultivated. To address these disparities, Grounds for Health endeavors to train local healthcare providers in cervical cancer prevention, ensuring that women receive treatment with the respect and dignity they deserve.
