Eliminate Beauty Bag Pests

Beat Those Beauty Bag Bugs

Many of us may not realize that our beauty products can be breeding grounds for bacteria, yeast, and fungi. A recent study indicates that between 79 and 90 percent of cosmetics show signs of contamination with potentially harmful microorganisms. Notably, beauty blending sponges are particularly troublesome, as 93 percent of users reported never having cleaned them.

While the presence of harmful microbes in our beauty routines is concerning, there are straightforward measures we can take to ensure our products remain clean and safe for use.

  • Always wash your hands before applying cosmetics.
  • Store cosmetics securely when not in use.
  • Clean your cosmetic brushes weekly using a gentle shampoo.
  • Daily clean makeup sponges (beauty blenders) with warm, soapy water, allowing them to dry completely.
  • Refrain from sharing makeup products.
  • Avoid applying makeup over open skin, wounds, or cracks.
  • If you suspect an eye infection or notice redness around your eyes, postpone the use of eye makeup until it has fully recovered.
  • Request single-use applicators when testing makeup products.
  • Dispose of expired makeup and applicators promptly.
  • Keep cosmetics in a cool, dry environment.
