From Boys to Well
Empower our daughters! A new era of female empowerment is upon us! As a mother of two teenage girls, I take joy in the societal shifts that are advocating for gender equality and safety. Movements like #MeToo and Time’s Up are shining a spotlight on issues of harassment and discrimination, allowing girls and women to embrace their innate strength and confidence. Cheers to this progress!
But what is happening with our boys?
It is crucial that our boys develop in a well-rounded manner into healthy, robust, and sensitive individuals who comprehend their role in society and extend respect to everyone. Unfortunately, many boys find themselves inundated with harmful messages surrounding sexism, homophobia, violence against women, and a cultural norm that encourages emotional suppression.
Embracing Emotional Vulnerability
Many boys face immense pressure to adopt a tough and assertive persona, leading to a reluctance to express warmth or empathy—traits often viewed as feminine. These limiting stereotypes can be damaging, promoting the idea that showing emotions or even crying is something to be dismissed.
This expectation to remain perpetually strong can result in boys suppressing their feelings. Since our experiences inevitably include vulnerability, sadness, and disappointment, they may miss the chance to enhance their emotional intelligence.
Consequences of Suppressing Emotions
Suppressing emotions may lead to various negative outcomes, including heightened stress, mental health issues, weight fluctuations, and even negative impacts on gut health. The social isolation stemming from emotional shutdown can place men at an increased risk for serious conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and depression, especially among young men of color who are particularly susceptible to toxic stress.
Transforming the Concept of Masculinity
Thankfully, we have the ability to reshape cultural narratives. However, the term “toxic masculinity” has been gaining traction and may not effectively facilitate this change. Critics argue that labeling masculinity as inherently flawed tends to instill shame and judgment rather than fostering genuine transformation. Such negative connotations are especially ineffective in reaching teenage boys.
Effective Strategies
According to Barry MacDonald, a Canadian author and expert on mentoring boys, it is entirely feasible to raise boys who are compassionate, brave, and ethical.
His teachings emphasize nurturing boys’ capabilities to build connections and intimacy while also embracing traditional masculine traits. He asserts that these qualities are not mutually exclusive; healthy boys can proudly embody their strengths while also exploring deeper emotional skills.
Fostering Genuine Connections
The ideal pathway to a well-rounded existence involves cultivating emotional intelligence alongside courage and resilience. Successful individuals are capable of articulating their emotions, demonstrating empathy, collaborating with others, and resolving conflicts harmoniously.
Encouraging boys to embrace their emotional dimensions will enhance their self-awareness, self-acceptance, and ability to connect meaningfully with others, leading to better relationships and fulfilling lives.
Celebrating Diversity
By promoting and celebrating practices that contribute to the diverse developmental needs of boys, we create possibilities for a brighter, healthier, and safer future. Accepting various expressions of manhood can help foster vibrant, compassionate, and balanced communities. Hooray!
