Inside Out
If you’re one of those men (and really, anyone) who finds the elaborate 27-step skincare regimens popularized by celebrities overwhelming, there’s good news. You don’t have to settle for lackluster skin. In fact, what you ingest is equally crucial as what you apply on your skin.
“The healthier my diet, the more my skin thrives,” shares plant-based influencer Leo Venus. While he is dedicated to using aloe vera and protecting himself from sun exposure, he is acutely aware of the vital connection between gut health and skin quality.
“Consume a variety of foods that nourish the body, and since the skin is part of that body, it will reap the rewards of better nutrition!” he emphasizes.

Boost your intake of skin-friendly foods
If you follow a plant-based diet, you’re already on the right path. Research indicates that dairy may contribute to acne due to hormones present in milk. Eliminating skim milk, in particular, could significantly enhance your skin’s appearance. Additionally, incorporating more fruits and vegetables can further improve your complexion.
“I grew up eating carrots regularly, thanks to my mom’s advice, and I found out later that they are rich in vitamin A, which is fantastic for the skin. I still keep carrots in my diet,” explains Milain David, founder of Eben Naturals, a skincare company dedicated to individuals of color.
Other beneficial foods for your skin include those rich in vitamin C, such as sweet potatoes and citrus fruits, which help maintain collagen levels crucial for youthful skin. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like walnuts and flax seeds, also promote skin hydration.
Incorporate probiotics
As you fill your plate with nutrient-rich foods, think about adding probiotics to your regimen. “Probiotics help maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms in the gut,” says Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, medical director of Mudgil Dermatology. “When our gastrointestinal flora gets disrupted, it can lead to a pro-inflammatory state, which can be detrimental to skin health.”
Keep hydration a priority
The frequent reminder of “hydration, hydration, hydration” holds true because it truly impacts your skin’s health. “Proper hydration helps slow the aging process by maintaining skin elasticity, which is essential for optimal cellular function,” Mudgil explains.
It’s crucial to hydrate from within by drinking plenty of water, but also ensure your skin stays nourished externally. David advocates for using vitamin E while showering and applying fresh aloe vera to further hydrate his skin after drying off.
Incorporate exercise into your routine
Once you’ve revamped your pantry and filled your water bottle, it’s time to get moving. “Physical activity significantly boosts blood circulation to the skin, enhancing nutrient delivery to skin cells,” Mudgil notes. Moreover, research shows that exercising can improve skin structure, making it look younger, especially if it hasn’t been damaged by the sun.
After your workout, reward yourself with a steam session, a practice David cherishes for its detoxifying and relaxing effects.
Sea buckthorn oil
Rich in omega-7, sea buckthorn oil can be consumed or applied topically. It is packed with vitamin E, lycopene, and beta-carotene, assisting with skin hydration, resilience, and cell turnover. It may also provide some protection against UV rays, making it particularly beneficial during warmer months (though it should not replace sunscreen or other protective strategies).
Astaxanthin
Although astaxanthin is less commonly known than other carotenoids, it is a powerful antioxidant that can address wrinkles, dark spots, skin moisture, and overall texture. A study focused on its effects specifically in men found that supplementation improved the appearance of crow’s feet, skin elasticity, and moisture retention.
Vitamins C and D
You can obtain vitamin D not just from the sun; consider taking a supplement to support cellular function without the harmful exposure and skin damage associated with sunbathing. Vitamin C supplements assist in collagen production, helping your skin remain bright and firm throughout the summer.
Plant-based collagen boosters
No meat? No issue. Plant-based collagen boosters are available and include ingredients such as amino acids, silica, biotin, and vitamin C, all of which aid in maintaining youthful skin.
