Design a Cozy Fall Getaway

Nest mode for the dark months ahead

Bears go into hibernation during winter months, while numerous plant species experience dormancy. Hummingbirds, too, reduce their activity. It seems we have a few lessons to draw from nature! As the days grow shorter and darker, we have the opportunity to cultivate warmth, coziness, and comfort in our environments. Implementing small adjustments in our homes and daily habits can enhance our overall well-being.

Feeling Down?

You’re certainly not alone if you experience feelings of sadness during the fall and winter seasons. “For many, diminished sunlight can lead to increased risks of depressive moods,” explains Glenda Wallace, MA, RCC. “In simpler terms, more sunlight results in more neurotransmitters, leading to improved mood. Conversely, less sunlight causes higher melatonin levels, making us feel sluggish and tired, which can trigger behaviors such as overeating, oversleeping, and reducing outdoor activity, ultimately leading to a negative feedback loop.”

Wallace also notes that the reduction in light can influence metabolism. “Your brain communicates to conserve energy, resulting in a slowed metabolism and heightened hunger,” she articulates.

Building a Foundation for Well-being

The positive takeaway, according to Wallace, is that “we can integrate healthy practices into our daily lives regularly.” She suggests the following approaches:

  • Seek sunlight outdoors every day (at least 30 minutes recommended) or use special light boxes that simulate sunlight
  • Engage in consistent exercise to release endorphins
  • Maintain a nutritious diet (consult your doctor regarding potential vitamin D supplements)
  • Manage stress effectively (this may involve counseling or medication)
  • Establish a personal routine that incorporates enjoyable activities

Create a Comfy and Cozy Space

  • Start by cleaning and organizing; for many, cluttered spaces do not promote mental wellness.
  • Opt for tranquil colors; this is often subjective, but many individuals find green soothing, perhaps due to its nature associations.
  • Utilize aromatherapy; certain scents like lavender can provide calmness, while others, such as citrus, can energize.
  • Incorporate elements of nature, whether through houseplants or natural decor like pinecones.
  • Design a cozy reading corner filled with soft blankets and a comfy chair.
  • Set up a coffee or tea station in your kitchen (don’t forget hot chocolate for the kids!).

Hygge for Everyone!

The Danish idea of hygge—which translates to “coziness”—encourages individuals to embrace the bleak, cold months. “Anything that boosts comfort, warmth, togetherness, and a sense of contentment takes precedence,” Wallace states. “One of my favorite wintertime activities is creating a comfy atmosphere by lighting candles or starting a fireplace and inviting friends for tea and heartfelt conversations.”

Wallace encourages simplicity. “It involves appreciating the beauty of life and finding joy in everyday experiences. Dedicating time to yourself and connecting with loved ones can foster tranquility, alleviate stress, and enhance your mood.”
