Elevating Beauty
Since cannabis was legalized in Canada, its applications have expanded significantly, featuring in a variety of products ranging from sweets and beverages to pet treats and candles. Among these are beauty and personal care items.
Cannabis, specifically cannabidiol (CBD), is emerging as a sought-after ingredient in the beauty sector, making its way into items like face masks, moisturizers, cosmetics, and body washes. In the United States, numerous prominent cosmetic brands have introduced CBD-infused lines, showcasing the growing trend of using cannabis compounds to enhance beauty and self-care experiences.
The Situation in Canada
In Canada, beauty products may only incorporate cannabis derivatives that are either outside the definition outlined in the Cannabis Act or those that have been cleared under the Industrial Hemp Regulations.
This creates some complexity, as any ingredient obtained from the Cannabis sativa (industrial hemp) must not include isolated or concentrated phytocannabinoids or a synthetic equivalent.
Both CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component in marijuana, qualify as phytocannabinoids and cannot be intentionally included in cosmetic products. CBD is classified as a Prescription Drug, meaning that products with deliberately added CBD must proceed through the prescription approval process to be sold legally in Canada.
Current State of Cosmetics
Beauty products can include phytocannabinoids that exist naturally in small quantities within hemp. However, if a product contains THC, the concentration must be minimal, specifically under 10 μg/g—meaning a CBD-infused skincare product will not induce any psychoactive effects.
Such products are widely available in retail outlets and online stores.
Potential Benefits
CBD beauty products have shown particular promise for treating mild skin ailments like acne. Initial findings suggest that CBD functions as a safe and effective anti-acne agent that could rival traditional pharmaceutical remedies without significant side effects.
Its reputed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may aid conditions like psoriasis or eczema and might also reduce wrinkle visibility.
Researchers believe that the body’s endocannabinoid system allows for optimal absorption of beneficial extracts, enhancing their efficacy.
Marketing Hype or Genuine Benefits?
Advocates for CBD-infused cosmetics assert numerous additional advantages, though some of these claims may currently lack robust scientific backing. For instance, they suggest that CBD-based mascara might enhance lash length, while CBD lip gloss could hydrate lips, and CBD creams might minimize fine lines.
Research on these products is still in the early stages, with much still to be understood about their safety, effectiveness, and long-term impact, especially for vulnerable groups such as pregnant individuals.
Caution Advised
“CBD is the new buzzword in beauty, but it’s still in its infancy,” remarks Saina Taidi, the chair of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists in Ontario, also serving as a senior risk management official at Estée Lauder.
“Ongoing studies are essential. I would never recommend replacing established antioxidants like vitamin C and E in creams with CBD oils. Many properties of CBD remain unexamined. I have no objections to its use; however, it’s crucial to allow time for comprehensive exploration of this emerging ingredient.”
Taidi emphasizes the importance of thorough research when considering CBD products, especially those purchased online, as they may be incorrectly labeled. Some have been found to contain significantly less CBD than declared on their packaging, with some products potentially being unsafe.
“There are instances where products are produced in unregulated labs and marketed online without oversight from Health Canada or the FDA,” Taidi cautions. “When shopping through social media platforms, verify the legitimacy of the brands.”
“Every cosmetic product is unique; similar to any topical treatment, the effectiveness depends on individual skin type. For those with sensitive skin or complex conditions, consulting with a doctor about your skincare choices, including CBD products, is advisable,” she recommends.
