Is it time to reassess your workout regimen? Unsure if your gym visits are yielding optimal results? To enhance strength, build muscle, and refine body composition, concentrate on the six primary movement patterns essential to strength training: squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, and carry.

Comparing Fundamental Movements to Isolated Muscle Workouts

Rather than dedicating most of your workout time to targeting isolated muscle groups, it’s more beneficial to emphasize these six foundational movement patterns. Unlike isolation exercises such as bicep curls or calf raises, the fundamental movements consist of compound lifts.

These compound movements engage multiple joints and muscle groups, enabling you to lift heavier weights. They are also more efficient for developing functional strength, boosting your metabolic rate, and enhancing bone density.

The significance of these patterns goes beyond the gym; they are essential in everyday activities like lifting groceries, rising from an office chair, or reaching for items on a high shelf. Additionally, whether you’re working out at home or in a gym, these movements can help you optimize your time!

The Six Key Movement Patterns

Squat

The squat entails lowering your body by flexing at the hips and knees, followed by returning to a standing posture. This movement is integral for tasks such as getting up from a chair or entering and exiting a vehicle.

Variations: goblet squat, barbell back squat, sumo squat, resistance band squat, dumbbell front squat

Hinge

The hinge, often referred to as a deadlift, involves bending primarily at the hips while keeping knee motion minimal. This engages the posterior chain muscles, particularly the glutes and hamstrings, and is vital for lifting objects off the ground without straining the lower back.

Variations: barbell deadlift, kettlebell deadlift, single-leg deadlift, kettlebell swing

Lunge

A lunge involves stepping one leg either forward or backward while lowering your hips towards the ground. This movement enhances balance and unilateral strength, important for activities like stair climbing or rising from the floor.

Variations: lateral lunge, forward lunge, reverse lunge, walking lunge

Push

Pushing movements require pressing weight away from your body, engaging the chest, shoulders, and triceps. Everyday examples include pushing open a door or placing items on a high shelf.

Variations: push-ups, barbell overhead press, barbell bench press, dumbbell incline press, kettlebell single-arm overhead press

Pull

Pulling actions involve bringing weight towards the body, working the back and biceps. This pattern is used for tasks such as closing a garage door, pulling down blinds, or moving a chair.

Variations: seated row, pull-ups, lat pulldown machine, dumbbell bent-over rows, resistance band rows

Carry

Carries entail holding weights while walking, fortifying the core, upper body, and grip strength. You perform this movement when transporting groceries from your car to your home. Aim to gradually carry the equivalent of your body weight—split evenly between both hands—for 20 to 30 seconds. (Using dumbbells or kettlebells is much easier than wrestling with groceries!)

Variations: kettlebell carry, overhead carry, yoke carry, sandbag carry

Incorporating all six movement patterns in every session isn’t necessary, but ensure each one is exercised at least once a week.

When creating workout plans, my coaching team and I prioritize these foundational movement patterns before adding any isolation exercises. Clients who train twice a week typically do not engage in isolation movements. For those who work out four times a week, we may introduce one or two isolation exercises towards the end of a session, but compound movements remain the core focus.

Prepare yourself to effectively squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, and carry in your workouts!
