Mindful Screen Time: A Guide

Your Guide to Mindful Screen Time

Winter often invites us to cozy up with snacks and movies, but excessive screen time can lead to mindless activities. This season, let’s shift our focus from passive consumption to more intentional engagement with our screens.

Are screens beneficial or harmful?

The reality is both. Glenda Wallace, a registered clinical counsellor from Vancouver Counsellor Services, emphasizes that there’s no universal answer to this question. Awareness is crucial

For instance, the effects of social media vary from person to person and depend greatly on the context of use.

Digital platforms can serve as valuable resources for acquiring information, forming connections, and finding support or entertainment. Wallace notes that when utilized mindfully, social media can uplift individuals and provide invaluable community ties.

Yet, unchecked use can also induce feelings of inadequacy and contribute to depression. Extended screen time may negatively affect cognitive capabilities, mental health, and sleep quality.

A balanced strategy is essential, according to Wallace. It involves understanding the downsides alongside recognizing the potential for forging meaningful connections and accessing beneficial resources in our lives.

Practicing Critical Thinking

Recognizing when to reconsider our digital habits starts with self-awareness, according to Wallace.

As we engage with social media, it’s important to reflect on the emotions certain platforms evoke. “If a site leads to feelings of inadequacy, it may not be beneficial to use,” Wallace advises. Conversely, if a site fosters feelings of happiness or connection, it likely offers a safe environment.

Examine the motivations behind our screen time. Are we using devices because we’re bored or trying to escape uncomfortable thoughts? Or are we seeking genuine connections?

Wallace prompts us to assess whether our screen engagement meets our true needs. Many people report that social media can distract from fulfilling interactions in their real-life communities. Ideally, social media should enhance our lives; when mismanaged, it can diminish them instead.

Establishing Mindful Habits

If you recognize the need for change, the next step is to devise a plan and commit to it. Here are some suggestions:

  • Tailor your social media experiences by following uplifting accounts while unfollowing those that induce negative feelings.
  • Monitor your screen time—most smartphones have features to help track this.
  • Consider taking a break from screens. Wallace suggests that stepping away can help regain a sense of control and presence.
  • Set clear boundaries for your screen use. You might decide to log out after reaching your screen time limit or keep devices away during specific times.
  • If you find it challenging to adhere to these boundaries, seeking help from a mental health professional may be beneficial.
