Renewing Facial Cleansers

Fresh Facial Cleansers

While the start of the New Year is often celebrated in January, the arrival of spring brings a sense of renewal that many consider the true fresh start. This season, why not apply that same spirit of renewal to your skincare routine by refreshing your cleansing regimen?

Gentle Approach

In recent times, the approach to facial cleansing has shifted from using abrasive, foamy face washes to embracing softer, more natural cleansers that often avoid soap and water altogether. And our skin is grateful for this change!

Many traditional facial cleansers include harsh detergents that can compromise the skin’s natural barrier. This can lead to increased risks of skin issues such as inflammation, dryness, irritation, and discomfort. Instead of stripping our skin of essential oils and good bacteria—which, like our gut, has beneficial microbiota—using gentle cleansers helps maintain the integrity of our skin’s barrier.

Examples of these milder skin cleansers include cleansing oils, lotions, balms, and waters.

Cleansing Oils

Cleansing oils not only serve as excellent moisturizers (see “Selecting a Moisturizing Oil” for more details) but can also effectively cleanse the skin. While it may seem odd to use oil for cleansing, cleansing oils have gained immense popularity among skincare aficionados and natural health proponents. The underlying principle is that “like dissolves like”; as such, oil effectively breaks down the oil on our skin.

Who It’s For

Oil cleansing is suitable for all skin types, including oily skin, as long as the product is labeled accordingly.

How to Use It

Always follow the instructions on the label. Generally, apply the cleansing oil to a dry face with a circular motion, then rinse with water and a gentle washcloth.

What to Look For

Cleansing oils can either be pure oils, like jojoba or sunflower oil, or specific blends designed for different skin types. Be cautious, though—not all cleansing oil products are natural. It’s best to purchase from natural health retailers and look for plant or nut oil formulations (steering clear of mineral oils) free from unnecessary additives.

Cleansing Lotions

Often referred to as cleansing milks, these creamy formulations provide a gentle yet nourishing cleanse without removing moisture from the skin.

Who It’s For

Cleansing lotions are versatile enough for even the most sensitive and dry skin.

How to Use It

Usually, cleansing lotions do not require rinsing; using a clean cotton pad or washcloth suffices, making them ideal for busy mornings. However, they might not effectively remove heavy makeup without rinsing.

What to Look For

Choose cleansing lotions with calming ingredients that promote skin health, such as sweet almond oil, glycerin, jojoba oil, or sesame seed oil.

Cleansing Balms

A more recent entrant to the facial cleansing scene, cleansing balms transition from a thick balm to oil upon application, providing a gentle cleansing experience. They are particularly effective at removing makeup.

Who It’s For

As with cleansing oils, there’s a cleansing balm suited for every skin type, from dry to oily. Always read the label to ensure the product meets your specific skin needs.

How to Use It

While cleansing balms may appear a bit messy to use, they are quite straightforward. Usually, apply the balm to a damp face and, as it’s massaged into the skin, it transforms into a creamy cleanser. Rinse off with water and a soft washcloth.

What to Look For

Beneficial ingredients found in cleansing balms include sweet almond oil, shea butter, olive oil, chamomile, lavender, and lemon.

Cleansing Waters

Known as micellar water, this cleansing method is a staple in French beauty routines that has only recently gained traction in North America. In straightforward terms, “micellar” refers to gentle cleansers suspended in a liquid. This results in a refreshing and soothing cleansing experience that effectively removes makeup.

Who It’s For

Micellar water is suitable for everyone; however, like other cleansers mentioned, it is particularly beneficial for sensitive skin.

How to Use It

Similar to cleansing lotions, micellar water is easy to use. Simply dampen a cotton ball with the liquid and sweep it across your face. No rinsing is necessary, making it ideal for travel or quick touch-ups.

What to Look For

As micellar waters are widely available, it’s crucial to check labels carefully and avoid products containing preservatives, mineral oils, and phthalates. Favor ingredients like glycerin, aloe, and natural extracts (such as grape, cucumber, and chamomile).
