Responding to the Call of the Wild

Outdoor adventure for women

In today’s society, where we often find ourselves indoors and glued to screens, we are increasingly recognizing the profound advantages—indeed, the necessity—of spending time outdoors.

The myriad positive physical and mental effects of engaging with nature are universal. However, for women seeking outdoor pursuits that extend beyond a casual stroll (which certainly brings its own rewards!), the obstacles can seem daunting.

Trish Van Haga, founder of the outdoor adventure network Women in the Wild Adventures, notes that potential adventurers often voice worries about safety, logistical considerations, and their own fitness levels.

Nevertheless, Van Haga is deeply committed to the idea that these apprehensions can be addressed through education, proper planning, and crucially, a sense of community. She believes that the rewards of overcoming these hurdles are as significant as those derived from the outdoor experiences themselves.

A Viral Initiative Takes Shape

After spending years on her own navigating trails and slopes, Van Haga yearned for a community. Therefore, she set out to create a venue where adventurous women, regardless of age or experience level, could come together to support and learn from each other. With her background as a former gymnast now turned forestry professional, she brings valuable safety knowledge, exceptional organizational skills, and an infectious enthusiasm for the outdoors.

What began as a Facebook group, connecting a few women for hiking or snowboarding near Vancouver, exploded in January 2024 when an Instagram reel showcasing highlights from the group’s 2023 adventures gained widespread popularity. This catalyzed the emergence of Women in the Wild Adventures as a dynamic community, offering various activities, supported by event “Ambassadors” who facilitate free events across Canada, the U.S., and beyond.

Empowerment Through Community

The safety concerns that women face when considering outdoor activities are significant yet manageable. “I prioritize safety and security,” asserts Van Haga, starting with verifying the identities of all potential members of Women in the Wild.

Event details are kept confidential so that only verified members are aware of where and when groups will convene (and it’s important to mention that this inclusive community welcomes anyone who identifies as a woman).

To help foster safety skills among women engaging in outdoor activities, Women in the Wild Adventures offers resources such as online courses, informative articles on topics like wilderness first aid and avalanche safety, along with suggestions for additional safety training.

Building Community in the Wilderness

Beyond offering practical support, women-centered adventure groups provide crucial community connections in a world that can often feel isolating. Van Haga is dedicated to fostering these relationships and witnesses the growth of numerous friendships within her organization.

“Joining a nature group like Women in the Wild, whatever the activity, fosters community, supporting mental and emotional well-being,” relays Van Haga.

Embracing a Broad Definition of Adventure

Adventure means different things to different people. For some, it might be the exhilaration of rock climbing or tackling white-water rapids, while for others, it could be a peaceful hike on well-maintained trails or a paddle on a tranquil lake. The image of an athletic climber atop a mountain peak is inspiring, yet it doesn’t encompass the diverse pleasures of outdoor adventures or the variety of individuals who partake in them.

Whether you venture outdoors with others or in solo reflection, maintaining an adventurous spirit and a desire to connect with nature can yield tremendous rewards.
