Fundamental Principles

Sydney Dumler

During her high school years, Sydney Dumler didn’t engage in team sports, yet she yearned for a sense of community. To fulfill this need, she explored yoga and Pilates, which allowed her both physical movement and social connection.

By the time she turned 18, Dumler’s dedication to her practice drove her to undertake teacher training. After successfully obtaining her certification and moving to Nashville for her studies, she took on the role of manager and instructor at a local yoga studio.

Eager to further her credentials, Dumler recognized a growing demand for group fitness opportunities in Tennessee. In response, she launched Forza Pilates in December 2023. Within just a few years, she has broadened her business to include two locations with plans for a third. Dumler’s enthusiasm for Pilates is clear, but her genuine dedication to her community is what’s revolutionizing the fitness landscape.

The power of positivity

The culture surrounding group fitness is undergoing a transformation. Dumler believes individuals seek movement that enhances their overall wellness, not just physical fitness. “The increasing popularity of Pilates is a testament to this shift,” she observes. While high-intensity workouts will remain an option, there is a growing recognition of the need for low-impact alternatives. “People desire routines that are accessible and leave them feeling accomplished rather than exhausted,” Dumler notes.

To ensure each client feels acknowledged and supported, she provides tours for newcomers and offers a concierge-level service. Her studios are thoughtfully designed to be warm and inviting, resembling a welcoming home rather than a sterile environment, and she prioritizes hiring personable staff to create this atmosphere.

Everyone welcome

Accessibility encompasses more than just offering low-impact classes and a cozy setting; it also requires inclusivity. Dumler incorporates modifications to cater to all skill levels. “While every class welcomes all levels, we guide participants based on individual needs,” she explains. “Our instructors are well-prepared with options for each exercise, allowing for variations that can either bolster support or increase difficulty.”

Fostering a more inclusive fitness environment also involves using body-positive language and fostering safe spaces. Dumler acknowledges the positive shift in how clients feel after participating in classes that promote support. “People are paying more attention now. We encourage our instructors to steer clear of any toxic or competitive language,” she states.

At Forza, Dumler offers various classes to suit different customer needs. “We run monthly Pilates sessions specifically for plus-size individuals in collaboration with a local influencer,” she shares, stressing the importance of a relatable atmosphere. “Being surrounded by individuals with similar body types or simply feeling accepted in this environment is vital. Studios must embrace these initiatives.”

She also recognizes the vulnerabilities of new parents and strives to provide them with communal support. “Returning to the gym postpartum can be daunting, compounded by feelings of mom guilt over leaving the baby,” Dumler notes. Hence, Forza features a BYOB (bring your own baby) class, enabling Nashville parents to connect while prioritizing their physical and mental well-being.

Strength in numbers

Working out with others is not only enjoyable; it also offers health advantages. Dumler has noticed that her clients prefer to linger after classes to socialize, as it creates a sense of belonging, highlighting the health benefits that come with community. “We consistently organize fun community events monthly,” she shares.

Research shows that participants in group fitness classes are more likely to maintain their workout routines compared to those who exercise alone. The knowledge that someone is counting on you to attend class serves as a strong motivator, decreasing the likelihood of skipping sessions.

Moreover, group fitness classes alleviate stress more effectively than solitary workouts. Community is integral to fostering a healthy lifestyle, and group classes facilitate mutual support, motivation, and bonding, leading to improved health outcomes.

Finding the right fit

Despite the appeal of group fitness classes, some individuals may still feel apprehensive about joining. Dumler recommends starting with online classes at home to familiarize oneself with the movements and terminology before attending in person. “Then, when you’re ready, muster the courage to join a group class with a bit of pre-existing knowledge, which can be very beneficial,” she advises.

It’s essential to be kind to oneself and work on shifting one’s perspective. “Feeling intimidated is perfectly normal,” Dumler acknowledges. “I recall my own apprehension before trying Pilates for the first time, but the key is to enter with an open mind and avoid setting unrealistic expectations.”
