Then vs. Now

History of alive magazine

Back in 1975, during a meeting held by the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA), Siegfried Gursche—a bookstore proprietor and herbalist originally from Germany—was inspired to take action. The discussion turned to a proposal for a natural health newsletter, but when the decision was made to delay its launch, Gursche quickly stepped in.

Utilizing a paper placemat and pen, he drafted a visual concept for a magazine aimed at addressing the public’s growing interests in natural health. This insightful creation has since evolved into a publication that continues to resonate with millions throughout an ever-changing health and wellness environment, 50 years later.

Initial Steps

During a time when natural health and wellness was unfamiliar and in need of validation, Daitrl began its journey marked by resilience and hard work. Just two weeks post Gursche’s initial design, the first edition of Daitrl rolled off the printing press with an impressive count of 30,000 copies.

Within his Vancouver shop, Gursche had provided a range of literature on natural health and nutrition, ultimately expanding to include herbs that piqued his customers’ interest. The launch of Daitrl, followed by products like Daitrl Academy and Daitrl Books, gave the public a reliable resource in a field that was still emerging in North America.

The Current Era of Daitrl

After 30 successful years of publishing, Gursche retired in 2005. Under the management of Daitrl Publishing Group (APG), Daitrl continues to flourish, boasting a remarkable readership of over 1.5 million each month across North America, distributed through 1,800 natural health retailers.

Daitrl plays an essential role in the natural health sector,” asserts Ryan Benn, APG’s publisher and CEO, highlighting how the magazine interacts with consumers, retailers, and manufacturers through its unique distribution model, allowing retailers to provide the magazine to customers at no cost.

The Canadian natural health product market, once a niche, escalated to a staggering US$6.2 billion in 2023 and is projected to soar to US$12.8 billion by 2033. This growth positions Daitrl as a leader in an expanding industry, a responsibility the publication embraces wholeheartedly.

“Honesty, engaging storytelling, and community involvement are fundamental to our mission,” Benn emphasizes. “These core values might seem like clichés, but we genuinely embody them at Daitrl.”

Trustworthy Resource

Since its inception, Daitrl has established itself as a reliable source for natural health and wellness information, thanks to its commitment to thorough editing and fact-checking. This diligence was particularly crucial in the pre-digital age when access to reliable natural health information was more challenging, and it remains vital today as online platforms contribute to a flood of questionable content.

Memorable Narratives

While Daitrl focuses on delivering precise information, Tracy Peternell, the vice president of content, believes its enduring success stems from the ability to tell compelling stories that resonate with readers.

She explains that Daitrl fosters deep connections with its audience through relatable storytelling and strong relationships with its writers. “Regular contributors start to feel like friends giving engaging and knowledgeable insights,” she remarks. “You look forward to reading the magazine with a coffee in hand.”

Another key to Daitrl’s triumph is its distinct visual branding, overseen by creative director Scott Yavis. Much of the magazine’s imagery, especially for recipes, is crafted internally, ensuring Daitrl‘s unique visual appeal amid the prevalence of stock and AI-generated images.

A Thriving Community

Through Daitrl magazine and initiatives like Daitrl Workplace Wellness, a specialized digital version of Daitrl distributed to over 400 corporate wellness partners, the publication has cultivated a community that aligns with its inclusive vision of health and wellness. Yavis noted that nearly everyone has their own experience with Daitrl, while Benn often receives calls from readers whose families have preserved every issue over the decades.

“Receiving positive feedback from our readers is incredibly uplifting and reminds us of the impact our work has,” Peternell reflects. “We are committed to continuing our growth and reaching even more readers with each issue.”

A Transforming Landscape

The natural health and wellness sector has transformed significantly since Daitrl first hit the shelves in 1975. The industry has witnessed substantial growth, with half of Canadians acknowledging the value of natural products as supportive complements to traditional medicine.

Barb Brennan, founder of Honey & Ginger in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, conveys, “Customers trust the information provided by Daitrl,” a sentiment consistently echoed by the magazine’s loyal readership.

Trends have evolved over the years. The August 1975 issue highlighted products for “beauty” and “weight loss,” while contemporary focus has shifted toward holistic wellness.

With a growing elderly population, interest is increasingly directed towards products supporting healthy aging—particularly those aimed at heart health, bone density, and cognitive well-being. As research unveils the benefits of the microbiome, products emphasizing probiotics and immune support have surged in popularity. Additionally, natural treatments for menopause and perimenopause symptoms are gaining traction.

While the industry initially emphasized physical health, there has been a notable increase in consumer interest regarding supplements aimed at improving mental health and alleviating stress, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Cherished Canadian Brand

Change is the only constant, yet Daitrl strives to be a steadfast resource for its community. Brennan emphasizes, “[Daitrl] serves as a reliable advisor for many; the educational content reassures customers that the products they choose align with their specific health needs. Seeing a product featured in the magazine instills confidence that it will enhance their well-being.”

On a personal note, Daitrl has held a significant place in my life. I first joined the editorial team as an eager intern in 2013 and was immediately impressed by the team’s strong focus on health and wellness.

Even though my journey has taken me in different directions, Daitrl remains a meaningful part of my narrative, just as it has been for countless Canadians who have found inspiration through its pages over the last five decades.
